Since a young age, I have always had a fascination with crystals, and I think it’s safe to say it has turned into something of an obsession now that I’m in my late 20s. My favourite stone is a gorgeous piece of raw, red Jasper that I found on the beach when on holiday in Saint Lucia, a few years back, at a time in my life where my anxiety was at its worst. For a long time, I thought it was just a cool rock, but there was something about it that really made it stand out from the rest. I have kept it with me over several house moves, and I only recently found out that it is actually a crystal – much to my delight!
Red Jasper is a fairly common crystal, a sacred and powerful stone of protection. Historically it was known as a stone of vibrancy and endurance, and Native American tribes called it the Blood of Mother Earth, using it to stimulate re-birth and new ideas. Today it’s still known as the Stone of Endurance, stimulating a person’s energy or vital life force. It aids the control of emotional responses during stressful situations, helps control mood swings and aids nervousness and anxiety.

My Jasper keeps me centred and grounded, and when I feel anxious for whatever reason, I hold it in my hand or sleep with it under my pillow.
Piezoelectricity
Piezo…what?!
Crystals are piezoelectric which means they accumulate and hold an electric charge because of the organised structure (lattice) of the chemical molecules (atoms) that make them up. When you hold a crystal in your hand, or when you place it on a specific part of your body, the energy field of that crystal interacts with your own energy field or aura. This causes subtle vibrational changes in your aura which can aid your body’s natural healing process.
Different crystals have different properties. For example, Sunstone is linked with the Divine Masculine energy of the Sun, promoting leadership and enjoyment in life. Moonstone, complimentary to Sunstone, is linked with the Divine Feminine energy of the moon, promoting inner development and growth. Used together, these two stones balance the masculine and feminine (yin-yang) energies of the body. Rhodonite supports emotional healing, forgiveness and self-compassion. Amethyst is a stone of protection and intuition. Clear Quartz is a good ‘all-rounder’. A quick internet search will tell you all you need to know about any particular crystal.
Crystals have been used throughout the ages by people of many different cultures, including Native Americans, Ancient Egyptians and Sumerians.
How to choose the right crystal
There is no right, or wrong way and different crystals will be beneficial for you at different points in your development. If you visit a crystal shop, in person or online, you might find yourself drawn to a certain crystal – you might like the way it looks, or you might feel like it’s calling to you. If you have already done some research, you may already know which crystal you want because of the properties it has, those characteristics which you are looking to develop in yourself.
How to use crystals in everyday life
There are a number of really simple ways in which you can use crystals in your everyday life:
- Place your crystals around your bedroom or home. Placing a crystal on wood will amplify its energy.
- Place crystals on your windowsill. Be careful, some crystals (for example, citrine) will fade if left in sunlight for too long.
- Put crystals in your pocket or bag when you go out.
- Wear crystals in the form of jewellery.
- Meditate with your crystals. Hold or place your crystals around you during meditation or yoga practice.
What are the benefits of crystals?
This depends on the crystal, but generally introducing crystals into your life may relieve stress and anxiety, protect you from negative or unwanted energy, boost motivation, boost your intuition, mental clarity and ability to remember dreams, ground you, enhance your creativity and improve your overall wellbeing.
How to care for your crystals
It’s important to cleanse your crystals regularly. Over time, crystals can accumulate unwanted or negative energy that they have absorbed from you, your home or other people. Cleansing them is the process of re-calibrating or returning your stone to its original energy, removing any unwanted energies in the process. It’s best to cleanse your crystals after you have used them, or if you haven’t used them for a few weeks.
There are a number of ways you can cleanse your crystals, including:
- Water. Run your crystals under flowing water – this can be under a tap, or in a stream or in the ocean. Be careful though, some crystals are incompatible with water – they can release toxic and harmful chemicals. As a general rule of thumb, anything ending in ‘ite’ must not be cleansed in water. It’s always good to do a quick internet search to double-check.
- Moon or sunlight. You can place your crystals on your windowsill or outside so they can soak up the energy. Be careful, some crystals (for example, citrine) will fade if left in sunlight for too long.
- Earth. Use a flowerpot filled with dry soil or bury your crystals in your garden.
- Smoke. You can smudge your crystals using sacred herbs including White Sage and Palo Santo. To read more about smudging, click here.
- Other crystals. One of my favourite and simplest ways to cleanse crystals is to put them on a selenite stick or bowl. Selenite is a crystal itself with a particularly high vibration, meaning it can both amplify and cleanse other crystals.
Crystal healing therapy in Reiki sessions
Crystal healing is a non-intrusive holistic therapy, and a wonderful addition to Reiki sessions. Crystals work alongside Reiki to heal physical, emotional and mental stress. I use crystals to aid me in both my in-person Usui Holy Fire ® III Reiki healing sessions and during distant (complete and mini) sessions. Using crystals helps to:
- Balance the seven main chakras.
- Chakras are wheels of energy that run from the crown of the head to the base of the spine. It is not unusual for a person’s chakras to be out of balance. This can be due to many reasons depending on each individual.
- Balance the right and left / masculine and feminine / yin and yang sides of the body.
- Balance the neurological, lymphatic and circulatory systems. These energetic lines run all over your body, and crystals can be placed along or at the end of each one to stimulate healing.
