Everyone experiences a Reiki treatment differently. You will also have a different experience each time you have a Reiki treatment. To help you make the most out of it, to really integrate the experience and the healing you undertake, it is important to follow some simple self care steps after the treatment.
Here are a list of some suggestions which I find to be the most effective. These are just suggestions, and not an exhaustive list that you need to follow step by step. Try one or some of them, and find what works best for you…
Hydrate – Reiki stimulate the body’s natural detoxing process. So much like when you receive a massage, after the treatment, you are encouraged to drink plenty of water. This helps flush out any toxins released during the treatment. Room temperature or hot water with a little lemon rather than ice cold drinks are absorbed more effectively and gently into the body.
Rest or take a nap – you may feel super charged, or you may feel a little tired, especially if you fell asleep during the treatment. Your body heals deeply during sleep, so if you feel you need to take some time out and you can – do it. If you’re out and about and not able to take a break, try and remember to take some time for yourself, and wind down gently before bed. Snuggle in your safe cosy space, make a cup of herbal tea, and read a book instead of scrolling your phone.
Ground your energy – Some people can feel a little floaty or spaced out after a Reiki session, even if they have grounded properly with me beforehand. For you to really embody the experience and integrate deep healing, you need to make sure you are grounded into the Earth and the physical plane. Eating something with natural sugars, like a smoothie, a piece of fruit or some dark chocolate can work wonders! Walking barefoot is another good one, or taking a salt bath. If you don’t have a bath at home, you can buy an inexpensive foot bath and some bath salts.
Be aware of your emotions – during, straight after, and for a few days post-Reiki treatment, you may experience strong emotions and strange feelings in your body. These can include emotional release (sudden crying or laughter), vivid dreams, uncomfortable feelings in your chest or tummy, or sudden clarity in certain areas of your life. It is important to allow these emotions to come up. If you feel like crying, cry. If you want to shout and scream – do it. Feel what you feel, and accept that you feel this way, right now. Feelings come and go, and ebb and flow. Processing emotions – feeling them, allowing them, accepting them, and then letting them go, is an important part of being a human. Moving energy through us, is something we may not have been taught to do, but it is essential to living a healthy life.
Diet – for the next 12-24 hours, it is helpful to avoid “heavy” foods. Eat things that make you feel light. Try not to overeat, drink alcohol and excessive caffeine, or too much refined sugar. This can help with the detoxing process.
